Management Training: a comparison guide for Australian teams

Choosing the wrong training format wastes budget and, worse, demoralises the managers you are trying to develop. This page lays out the real differences so you can decide before you commit.

Head-to-head: workshop vs. coaching vs. blended

Most providers sell one format. We deliver all three, so we have no reason to steer you toward the wrong one. Here is what each approach actually delivers.

Intensive workshop (2-day)
1-on-1 coaching (12-week cycle)
Covers delegation, feedback loops, and conflict resolution in a concentrated burst. Good for teams that can free up two consecutive days.
Focuses on the individual manager's real challenges week by week. Works best when a manager already has some foundation but keeps hitting the same walls.
Group size: 8 to 14 participants. Smaller groups get more role-play time; larger groups benefit from wider perspective.
Strictly one manager per coach. Sessions run 60 minutes via video or in person at our Benjamintown office.
Typical outcome: managers report higher confidence in difficult conversations within the first fortnight back at work.
Typical outcome: measurable improvement in direct-report retention after two full cycles. We track this with a short pulse survey.
Investment: from $3,200 per participant (includes materials and a 30-day follow-up call).
Investment: from $5,800 per 12-week cycle. Includes between-session email support and a written development plan.

Blended programme

Combines a one-day workshop with six weeks of fortnightly coaching. This is what we recommend for organisations promoting technical specialists into their first people-leadership role. It runs from $4,500 per participant and includes a 360-degree feedback report at week four.

After the blended programme, our team-lead turnover dropped from 22% to under 9% in one financial year. The coaching component made the difference because each manager could work through their specific sticking points rather than generic case studies.

HR manager, ACT government contractor, 2023

We sent 11 supervisors through the two-day workshop. Within a month, three of them independently restructured their weekly check-ins using the framework they learned. Sick-leave callouts in those teams fell noticeably.

Fit check: which format suits your situation?

Answer these quickly. No scoring, just honest reflection.

  1. Can your managers be away from their teams for two full days without causing a backlog? If yes, the intensive workshop is practical. If not, coaching or blended may be less disruptive.
  2. Are the challenges mostly shared across your management cohort, or does each manager face a distinct problem? Shared challenges suit workshops; individual problems suit coaching.
  3. Have your managers had any formal leadership training before? First-timers benefit from the structured foundation of a workshop before moving to coaching.
  4. Is your budget allocated per person or as a lump sum for the team? Per-person budgets often align better with coaching; lump sums can stretch further in group workshops.
  5. Do you need visible results within 30 days for a board report, or can you wait 90 days for deeper behavioural change? Workshops produce faster anecdotal wins; coaching produces more durable metrics.

What changed for real teams

We track results at 30, 90, and 180 days after every programme. Here are three outcomes from the past 18 months that show different kinds of improvement.

Aged-care provider, south Canberra

Twelve shift supervisors completed the blended programme between March and June 2024. Staff grievances lodged through HR dropped by roughly 40% in the following quarter. The supervisors credited the "difficult conversations" module, which gave them a repeatable script for addressing performance issues without escalating tension.

Software consultancy, Civic

Four newly promoted tech leads went through 1-on-1 coaching. Before the programme, all four described themselves as "reluctant managers." By week ten, two had voluntarily taken on mentoring responsibilities for graduate developers. One redesigned the team's sprint retrospective format, which the whole company later adopted.

Retail chain, ACT and southern NSW

Twenty-three store managers attended the two-day workshop in two cohorts. Mystery-shopper scores improved by an average of 14 points across participating stores over the next 60 days. The control group of stores whose managers did not attend showed no change.

Training pathways mapped by manager experience

Not every manager needs the same entry point. We have grouped our offerings by how long someone has been managing people, because a six-month manager and a six-year manager face fundamentally different problems.

New to management (0 to 12 months)

Covers the basics that no one teaches you when you get promoted: setting expectations, giving feedback that people actually hear, running a useful one-on-one meeting, and knowing when to escalate. The two-day workshop is the recommended entry point.

Recommended start: workshop

Established manager (1 to 3 years)

You know the mechanics but keep getting stuck on the same two or three issues. Maybe it is underperformance conversations, maybe it is managing former peers. Coaching unpacks your specific patterns and builds new habits over 12 weeks.

Recommended: coaching

Senior leader (3+ years, managing managers)

Your challenge is not managing individuals but shaping a management culture across your reports. The blended programme gives you a shared language with your direct reports and a coaching layer to refine your own leadership style.

Recommended: blended

Specialist stepping up

Engineers, clinicians, accountants, and other specialists who suddenly have a team. The workshop addresses the identity shift from "best at the work" to "best at helping others do the work." We run a version specifically for technical professionals twice a year.

Common concerns before booking

Will my managers actually change their behaviour?

Behaviour change depends on follow-through, not just content. That is why every programme includes a post-training check-in. For coaching clients, we build accountability into the weekly rhythm. For workshop attendees, a 30-day follow-up call reviews what has stuck and what needs reinforcement.

Can training be delivered on-site?

Workshops can run at your premises anywhere in the ACT or surrounding NSW region. We need a room that fits the group comfortably, a projector or large screen, and a whiteboard. Coaching sessions default to video but can be face-to-face at our Benjamintown office or yours.

What if a manager drops out mid-programme?

For coaching, unused sessions can be transferred to another manager within the same organisation at no extra cost, provided the switch happens before week eight. Workshop places can be substituted up to 48 hours before the session.

Do you offer group discounts?

Yes. Organisations enrolling five or more managers in any combination of programmes receive a 10% reduction. For ten or more, we build a custom proposal that usually works out more cost-effective than individual bookings.
